Laboratorios Roemmers was founded in 1921 by Alberto J. Roemmers, who, originally from Lennep, in the Rhineland region of Germany, sought new horizons in Argentina. With the contribution of German technology and having laid the foundations of the pharmaceutical-chemical industry, his company was a pioneer in the southern hemisphere and is currently among the most globally advanced in this field.
The Alberto J. Roemmers Foundation bears its name in his memory. Created in 1975, it supports research in the field of medicine through grants, organizing symposiums and courses, and publishing papers that endorse the renowned excellence of Argentine physicians.
Roemmers has set important trends in Argentine therapeutics by launching medical products such as: Amoxidal (amoxicillin), Sertal (propinox), Atlansil (amiodarone), Taural (ranitidine), Acalix (diltiazem), Lotrial (enalapril), Lanzopral (lansoprazole), Ciriax (ciprofloxacin) and, more recently, Losacor (losartan), Endial (glimepiride), Corbis (bisoprolol), and Plenica (pregabalin).
The manufacture of Dorixina (lysine clonixinate), a molecule developed by Roemmers’ Research and Development Department that is now exported with great success to Europe, deserves special mention, as it introduces a variation to the model of technology transfer in Latin America, which usually comes from abroad and, in this case, is exported.
